As Malaysia prepares to take on the ASEAN Chairmanship in January 2025, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof shared his vision for the region’s green energy transition. Malaysia aims to foster a collective commitment to renewable energy across ASEAN, aligning with global sustainability frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Fadillah stated, “We aim to translate green and renewable energy into a collective ASEAN commitment to ensure environmental sustainability.”
A key priority will be advancing the ASEAN Power Grid, which aims to integrate electricity networks among member states. Fadillah emphasized the importance of enhancing cross-border electricity transfers and streamlining legal frameworks for greater cooperation.
Additionally, Malaysia seeks to strengthen its position as a leader in technology and innovation, with a focus on sustainability. “Our efforts aim not just to address immediate challenges but also to create long-term opportunities for economic growth and environmental stewardship,” he said.
Technology plays a significant role in this transformation. IoT-enabled smart water meters will help monitor usage and reduce wastage, while AI-driven analytics will optimize energy grids to improve efficiency and reduce carbon footprints. Public-private collaboration is also crucial in advancing Malaysia’s sustainability goals, with investments in renewable energy and the adoption of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles being key drivers of change.
The I-Nation Global Summit 2024 also highlighted Malaysia’s commitment to innovation, showcasing advancements across six key industries: Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, autonomous technology, 5G connectivity, life sciences, healthtech, agritech, and sustainability.
